Garnet have been used in jewelry since prehistoric times. They come in a wide range of colors, although reds are the most frequent. They are the birthstone for January. The word garnet comes from the Latin word granatum (grain/pomegranite). Like the pomegranite seed, the garnet means fertility, but also protection and regeneration. Therefore they were used in engagement rings long before diamonds; and by warriors for healing. They are said to offer protection to the traveler. Noah is fabled to have used a garnet as a light on the ark. DH157-07
