Victorian Gold And Amethyst Hatpin. The demise of the hatpin marked a turning point for women's place in society. Laws made hatpins shorter for safety's sake. However, it was the wholesale entry of women into the work force during WWII, which ended the need for the hatpin, dress changed so dramatically.
This antique gold hatpin measures 6 1/4" long and is marked 10k on the head. The shaft is also gold and is nice and straight. A beautiful purple amethyst cabochon, with a 5 mm diameter, is bezel-set into the head. DH71-05

Early Plastic Victorian Revival Hair Comb. In the 1930s, at the same time that the Art Deco style promoted industrial geometric forms, there was a revival of the Victorian style. This 5 3/4" long early plastic hair comb is a great example. Color is a dark root beer brown, with tortoiseshell-type mottling. There is a refined floral brass decoration at the top, which is probably from an original Victorian mold. These same molds have been used for decades. LH57-06 - $45

Antique Art Nouveau Buckle. This beautiful Art Nouveau silverplated buckle measures 2 3/4" long. The decoration is of daffodils with the flower stems becoming sinous ribbons--a very typical Art Nouveau use of the whiplash curve. What amazes us is the dynamic rhythm found in Art Nouveau jewelry's compact design.
Daffodils (narcissus), as world-wide harbingers of spring, are emblems of new beginnings. As a signal for winter's end, they also symbolize future good fortune.

Pair of Late Victorian Riveted Cut Steel Shoe Buckles. Beautiful at any time, but taking center stage at night, cut steel jewelry became popular in the 18th and through the 19th century for its beautiful intricacy and sparkle in candlelight. In the 18th century it was very costly (more than gold) because the product was labor-intensive, requiring cutting, faceting, polishing and riveting. A pair of shoe buckles could take two weeks to produce. Generally, the smaller the studs of cut steel, the older the item. There were centers of production in England, very active until early Victorian times. Later, French centers carried on the trade.
This late Victorian shoe buckle pair features hundreds of faceted cut steel studs riveted into a brass backing. Three different sizes of studs are used. Buckles measure 2 1/4" across. Very good condition. DH280-07
