Florenza Cupid With Bouquet Brooch. The story of Cupid and Psyche is from Greek antiquity. Psyche, the most beautiful woman, earns the wrath of Aphrodite, who send’s her son Cupid to punish the beauty. Instead, he falls in love and marries Psyche with the condition that Psyche may never see him. He only comes to her at night, but overcome by doubts, Psyche lights her lamp to take a look at Cupid. She burns him with a drop of hot oil and Cupid wakes and flees. In the end, the story concludes happily, but the moral is, that love and suspicion cannot dwell together. The story has endured and placed Cupid as an avatar of all things romantic.
The goldtone brooch, signed Florenza, measures 1 5/8” tall. The Florentine finish dates this piece to the 1970s. Cupid’s flowers are a bright forget-me-not blue. (The flash has faded the color somewhat.) Clear rhinestones dot the flower centers and blue rhinestones light the cherub’s eyes. Very good condition.
Cupid and Psyche’s home was in a dale of flowers, so perhaps, when Cupid realized that they couldn’t be apart, he gathered a fresh flower offering on his return. DH92-05
