Richly Colored Leopard Jasper Necklace & Carved Pendant. Jasper is one of the oldest gemstone. The name meant "spotted stone" in Anglo-French. It is an opaque, usually red stone which can be highly polished. It's mentioned several times in the Bible and is the stone for one of the tribes of Israel. The stone is also known for its wonderful markings. Volcanic flow and other geological processes produce bands, swirls, pictures and unusual markings.
Leopard jasper is a variety of chalcedony and is noted for its spots of color. Leopard jasper shows particularly well against dark skin.
This vintage Chinese necklace is a beautifully color-matched set of (62) 10mm beads, and a 2 1/8" pendant, carved on both sides as a gourd. The length of the beads, not including the pendant, is 27 inches. The jasper is a rich mahogany color with some striking white and black mottling.
