Large Sterling Roman Chariot Race Brooch. Patterned after an ancient carved gemstone cameo, this brooch is approximately 2 1/4" wide. The compact design illustrates three teams of racers. Each charioteer stands in a racing stule, driving three horses. The Romans and Etruscans both adapted chariot racing from the Greeks. Chariot racing was an early Olympic event in Greece. The Mycenaeans are the first known participants in the sport.
